In his two-decades long career Sumit has travelled from being a telelvision reporter in the field to heading the political bureau of one of the most prestigious news channel. With a deep understanding of the changing media scenario, Sumit crossed-over to the digital platform and till recently as the Associate Executive Editor he headed the political/general news bureau at News18.com. The job profile included managing news content and its flow from the input side. He guided journalists in the bureau on content generation and presentation.News management notwithstanding, he continues to report from the field.

He has a keen interests in studying the online disruptions at the intersect of politics, communications and society. Apart from the professional responsibilities; and in pursuant of his academic interest, he takes classes at journalism schools- including one for the Indian Information Services officers under probation at Indian Institute of Mass Communication, New Delhi. He was Awarded the Inclusive Media Fellowship by the Centre for the Study of Development Societies (CSDS), New Delhi in 2010. Based on an extensive field work in central and northern parts of the country, wrote a series of articles on the agrarian crisis and the plight of De-notified Tribes (Formally Criminal Tribes of India).
He was Political Editor CNN-News18 Television (From 2012 to 2017). He Joined CNN-News18 in 2005 and have reported extensively on
both politics and government. He has been covering parliament proceedings for over a decade. He worked with Zee News and Eenadu TV (24 hour news channels) from 2000 t0 2006. Extensively covered electoral politics, including three federal and many provincial elections. He also covered the 2003 Iraq war for Zee News.
